Main Playground

Nearby mature oaks (east and south side)

The playground gets direct midday sun — no overhead shade structures. Morning visits get dappled shade from nearby oaks. By 4pm the trees cast long shadows that cover most of the play area. Bring hats and sunscreen for midday visits.

Oak Meadow / Railroad Area

Dense oak canopy

Map of Oak Meadow / Railroad Area

The Oak Meadow area where the Billy Jones Railroad and carousel are is shaded all day. Perfect spot to retreat when the playground sun gets too much. Let the kids ride the train while you cool off under the oaks.

Lakefront & Open Lawn

Scattered trees, mostly open

Map of Lakefront & Open Lawn

The 45-acre lawn is great for frisbee and soccer but it's wide open. Bring a portable shade tent if you're planning a lakeside picnic. The fishing spots along the south shore have some tree cover.

🍂 Seasonal: The oaks are semi-deciduous — they keep most of their leaves year-round but thin out somewhat in late winter. The eucalyptus trees are evergreen and provide consistent shade. Spring and fall are the perfect seasons here.

🛝 Playground

The playground is huge and handles crowds well — even on busy weekends there's room for everyone. The toddler section is separated from the big-kid equipment. Rubber and sand surface. No shade sails, but nearby oaks provide dappled shade in the morning.

Toddler Playground

Ages 2-5
Low platform structure with baby slidesBucket swingsCrawl-through tunnelsSteering wheels and activity panels

Separated from the big-kid area by a short path. The equipment is all under 4 feet — manageable for parents hovering over wobbly walkers.

Main Playground

Big, open, and well-built. The tall slide is the main attraction — expect a line on weekends. Plenty of room for kids to run between structures.

🍽️ Where to Eat

🍽️
Super Duper Burgers · 0.5 miles (2 min drive)

The best burger near any park on our list. Grass-fed beef, great fries, and a simple menu that doesn't overwhelm kids. Right on Blossom Hill Road, less than 2 minutes from the park entrance.

💡 They have a kids' meal with a small burger, fries, and drink. The outdoor patio is stroller-friendly. Expect a 10-15 min wait on weekend lunchtimes.

Los Gatos Coffee Roasting · 1.2 miles (5 min drive)

A Los Gatos institution. Excellent coffee, relaxed vibe, and right on charming Main Street. If you're making a day of it, combine the park with a stroll through downtown Los Gatos.

💡 Small shop with limited seating — grab your drinks to-go and walk Main Street. The bakery items sell out early on weekends.

🍦
Lexington Ice Cream · 0.3 miles (1 min drive)

The post-park reward. Small local ice cream shop right next to the park entrance. Nothing fancy, just good ice cream in a cone — which is all a 3-year-old needs.

💡 Cash and card accepted. They have a window so you don't need to go inside with sandy kids.

How to Pay

Pay at the entrance booth (staffed on weekends and busy days). Self-pay iron ranger (cash/check only) on quieter days. No app payment.

Pro Tip

Weekend lot fills by 10:30am in good weather. If the main lot is full, drive deeper into the park — there are several overflow lots. The walk to the playground is longer but manageable with a stroller.

🌳 Shade Analysis

Canopy: 55% overall — higher near picnic areas and Oak Meadow, lower on open lawn

Structures: Covered group picnic areas available by reservation. No shade structures on the main playground.

Best shade: Oak Meadow area (railroad/carousel), northern picnic groves, Los Gatos Creek Trail corridor

Least shade: Main playground (midday), open lawn areas, lakefront walking path

Vasona's shade story is the mature oaks. The Oak Meadow area is consistently shaded, and the picnic groves tucked among the trees are excellent. The main playground's lack of shade structures is its biggest weakness — save that for morning or late afternoon visits.
